Alma Walton Diggs Obituary

Alma Jean Walton Diggs, was born to the late Albert Walton and the late Josephine (Walton) Pritchett in Thomaston, AL, on February 8, 1940.  She peacefully slipped away early Saturday morning, April 6, 2024, embraced by the love and admiration of her family and dearest friends.

The eldest of five children, Alma attended the Marengo County Training School, in Thomaston, AL. She later moved to Mobile, AL, where she met and married Rev. Armstead R. Diggs in July 1970. They created a loving and prosperous life together for more than fifty-one years, in Port Huron, MI.

A supportive wife and devoted mother, Alma Jean pursued her career goals as a medical assistant and retired from McLaren Port Huron Hospital after thirty-two years of service. Simultaneously, she built a legacy through entrepreneurship as owner and operator, of AJ’s Hair Salon & AJ’s Too Millenary Boutique for twenty-two years. As a pillar in her community and a woman of great faith, she also counseled, nurtured, and helped many as First Lady of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church (Smith’s Creek, MI) and Friendship Missionary Baptist Church (Port Huron, MI).

Affectionately known as “Ms. Alma,” she was truly respected for her lady-like way and quality of presenting herself. No one could match her unique wit, sass, or way of describing a situation. A true wordsmith, she never minced words and always said what was on her mind. Ms. Alma fed the hungry, while feeding their soul; showed kindness, as well as empathy for others; and led by example, how to persevere and never give up without a fight. Her beautiful smile and the light in her hazel-brown eyes will be immensely missed by all!

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister Josephine Gill (Texas). She leaves behind three doting siblings, Roosevelt Harris (Peggy) of Alabama, Edwina Kennedy (Newton), of Alabama, and Theodore Pritchett of North Carolina; uncle Willie Edward Harris (Evelyn) of Texas; three devoted children, Dr. Wilma Wooten of California, Willie James Wooten, Jr. of Texas, and Jennifer Diggs Davis of Virginia; loving foster daughter, Paula Harris of Virginia; seven grandchildren, Marshall Wooten, Melanie Wooten, Kendall Davis, Kaleb Davis, Andrew Hargrove, Baffour Opoku, Jr., and London Wooten; four great-grandchildren, Marshall Tucker, Athena Tucker, Derrick Wooten, and Lilly Mae Wooten; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Alma Jean’s spirit of tenacity, grit, and fight will be missed. She is now resting in peace in the bosom of the Father and with her departed loved ones. O Lord, grant her eternal grace and let your perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul rest in peace!

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Whiting's Funeral Home.
