Wanda L. Blackburn departed this earthly life for eternal peace, at Norfolk Hospital on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. She fought a long hard battle but God said "No more pain and no more suffering," come home and rest my child.
Wanda grew up in Jersey City, NJ, Charles City, and Williamsburg, VA. She gave her life to the Lord at a young age and was baptized at Liberty Baptist Church in Charles City. She attended school in all three towns and in 1983 she graduated from Bruton High School in York County. After high school, she followed behind her cousin, who was more like a sister Lisa Jones-Blocker, and attended Hampton University where she majored in Accounting. She married Alfonzo Blackburn shortly after that. This union was blessed with two children, Nicole and Jonathan. They were the joys of her life. She was a stay-at-home mom but relished the opportunities when she could take on side jobs in fields involving numbers and accounting.
Wanda was a smart girl with a sweet personality, always kind, friendly, loving, and comical at times. Her closest family members used to call her "Squeezy," because of her maiden name Lemon. She didn't like it at first but then she started to laugh along with everyone else as she began to embrace the nickname. Wanda enjoyed cooking and doing chores around the house which were instilled in her by her late great Aunt Minnie. Some of her favorite dishes to cook were Mac & Cheese, Lasagna, and Banana Pudding.
Wanda is preceded in death by her mother, Jean Lemon Dixon, and father, Gene "Bally" Cowles. She leaves to cherish her fond memories, her children, Nicole and Jonathan Blackburn, both of Williamsburg, VA; husband Alfonzo Blackburn of Hampton, VA; three brothers, Terence Lemon of Williamsburg, VA, Gene "Geno" Cowles of Newport News, VA, and Gene "Tiger" Cowles of Williamsburg VA; sister Genee' Cowles of Atlanta, GA; stepmother Yvonne Cowles of Atlanta, GA; her closest friends who were always supportive, Sandy Carter, Trina Christian Coleman, Karen Green, and Barbara Taylor; and a host of family and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Whiting's Funeral Home.
Professional services entrusted to the staff of Whiting's Funeral Home, 7005 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, Virginia 23185. 757-229-3011 whitingsfuneralhome.com
