Josephine M. Wilkins

On Friday, January 10, 2020, Mrs. Josephine Mattie Wilkins earned her wings.  Her earthly journey began on July 10, 1932, the daughter of the late Joseph and Elva Gill Gantt.

She was educated in the Newport News Public School System.  Josephine was the mid-wife for Northampton County, North Carolina, where she delivered numerous babies and was a caregiver to several patients.

She was a faithful member of Tillery Baptist Church, in Tillery, North Carolina until her relocation to Newport News, Virginia.  She enjoyed cooking, doing arts and crafts, crossword puzzles, and helping others in need.

Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lee Wilkins, sons, Tyrone and Edward Wilkins, and Wilbert and Junius Redcross.  Her memories will forever be cherished by her children, LaVerne Williams of Hampton, VA., LaVerna Worsley of New York, NY., Chander Barber and Zelva Warren (Weldon) of Hampton VA., Edwina Wilkins-Drew (Andrew) of Washington, D.C., and Edwin Wilkins (Cynthia) of Suffolk, VA.; a grandson (whom she raised) Donnell Wilkins (Kia) of Hampton, VA; eighteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mildred Wilkins of Newport News; brother-in-law, Ozzie Wilkins of Scotland Neck; partner in crime, Chris Gammon; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, January 18, 2020, at Ray of Hope Christian Center, Whitakers, NC.  Interment to follow in the Wilkins Family Cemetery, Halifax, NC.  Mrs. Wilkins may be viewed on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m. until the hour of her service.
