Marquis Devon Chapman was born December 12, 1992, at the former Williamsburg Community Hospital. At 5 months of age, he began to experience uncontrollable seizures, which lead to numerous visits to the emergency room, and ICU.
Marquis was educated in the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools through 5th Grade, then transferred to Newport News Public Schools, from 6th to 12th Grade. Marquis was baptized and became a member of the Word Christian Fellowship Church.
Marquis had a great love for people and spoke to everyone he came in contact with. He never encountered a stranger and loved greeting everyone. His smile and infectious laugh will surely be missed. Marquis had a heart of gold, no matter how he felt, and offered all he could to anyone. Marquis’ favorite saying was “I Pulled the Sun Out for you”, as he most certainly did daily, with his presence.
Marquis was preceded in death by his great-grandmothers, Thelma Bacon and Zilla Griffis, nephew, Jaden, aunt, Doris Chapman-Smith, and great-uncle, Dawud Muqtasid. He leaves cherished memories with his mother, Tanisha Graves (Bobby), father, Maurice Chapman (Jennifer); grandparents, Vanessa Graves (Thomas), Rosa Chapman, Celestine Coles (Samuel), Alwaajid Beybeyah (Lynda); sisters, Tyrashae Cowles, LeShan Graves, Maria Richmond, Jasmine Washington; brothers, Maurice Chapman, Jr. (Doniece), Maurice Morris, Bobby Graves, Jr., Marcus Graves, Marcel Goddin, Connor Goddin; nieces and nephews, Nevaeh, Skai, Aiyana, Maurice III, Elijah, Casey, Ravi and Damiah; Godfather, Clarence Travers; God-sister, Crystal Edlow; special loved ones, Attonnavie and Shawn Wilson, Lelia Gayflor, and Mary Argabright; aunts, uncles, great-aunts and great-uncles, Vanessa Tyler-Crew (Dennis), Charmin Borum, Deann Coles (Angela), Betty Kempinski (Christopher), Audrey Boyd, Sherene Chapman, Marie Dammons, Rodney Chapman (Melissa), Rudolph Chapman, Samuel Tyler, Sidney Reed, Albert Griffis, Calvin Griffis, Elmer Griffis, Terry Griffis, Taneisha Bryant, Shante Tucker, Latoya Tucker, Raye Lassiter (Fernandez), Phyllis Graves, Clareitha Griffis, Julie White, Gerenda Robinson (Greg), Felicia Meekins, Marie Dammons, Blanche Reed, Vivian Graves, Lenore Meekins, Mildred Harris (William), Gertrude Smith, Donna Palmer, Alan Braxton, Marshall Braxton, Terry Palmer, Pernell Tucker (Lakiya), Mark Graves (Edith), Sidney Reed, Peter Braxton, and Blanche Wallace; and a host of other relatives and friends.
