Maurice Scott Obituary

Maurice Dorothy Scott was born Dorothy Maurice Banks to the late Redell and Coleman Banks in Magruder now known as Camp Perry, Virginia.  The family moved to Highland Park in Williamsburg where she attended Oak Grove School.  She gave birth to her son, Rufus Jerome Banks Sr. and shortly followed in her sister Rosetta’s footsteps and moved to New York City.  She enjoyed her life in New York, first living in East Harlem and then moving to where the night life was in Harlem, living on Sugar Hill.

She met and married a young sailor by the name of William “Bill” Beale.  Shortly after marriage, they purchased a home in Rahway, New Jersey.  They lived in Rahway for many years.  While living there she worked as an associate for the Revlon Company.  Her son Rufus, married and started his own family, having three boys, and one girl.  She enjoyed having her family and friends close to her in New Jersey.  Several years later, she and her husband Bill moved back to the Virginia area, settling in a home across from her beloved father, Coleman.  She was employed at Eastern State Hospital; retiring after many years of dedicated service.

Maurice rejoined her family church, Mount Gilead, where she served on the Usher Board and later as a Deaconess.  Her husband Bill went on to heaven and she then married Mr. Alfred “Scottie” Scott. A few years after marrying Scottie, he also went on to Heaven.  She spent the rest of her years enjoying time with her family and friends. She later joined Union Baptist Church where she was very active in all ministries until her health began to fail.  Maurice was a lifetime member of the NAACP, and also a member of the Highland Park Civic Association.  She remained an active member until her death.  She enjoyed traveling, horse racing, playing cards, reading suspense novels, and studying the Bible.  She loved the Lord and all His glory.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her son, Rufus Jerome Banks Sr. (Christine); grandchildren, Rufus Jr., Roslyn, Russell, and Kevin (Glynis); loving great-granddaughters, Leah, Amber, Courtney, Katelyn, Zharia, and Tiffany; great-grandsons, Kevin Jr., Khalil, Russell Jr., and Nikolas; great-great-grandchildren, Olivia, Mia, Jaylen, Jordan, Dallas, Kaylee, and Brooke; nieces, Annette and Marcia (Vince), nephews, Morris (Dorothy), Henry and Ronnie (Trinnese) and a host of loving family and friends.

Maurice deeply loved all her family and friends and enjoyed special times in fellowship with her loving girlfriends, Evelyn Brown, Anna Hopkins, Laverne Hill, Phyllis Jones, Deloris Parker, and Parthenia Brooks.
