On Friday, June 7, 2019, God called his beloved Romeo A. Whitby, home to eternal rest, in Bon Secour Mary Immaculate Hospital, with family by his side. His life journey began on June 16, 1932, son of the late Annie V. Whitby and Fred Travis, of Yorktown, Virginia.
At an early age, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and joined Morning Star Baptist Church, Williamsburg, Virginia.
He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding, after many dedicated years as a Ship Fitter. He always talked to his children about the importance of hard work and family. He was very handy at fixing things; a trait that his children inherited. His favorite pastime was watching the news and BET.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha C. Whitby, sons, Tony B. Whitby, Larry Tyler, and Eugene Tyler. Romeo leaves to cherish fond memories with his children, Lester Tyler (Tonya), Marlene Shoulders (Terry), Charlene Jones (Tommy Lee), Alphonso Whitby (Michelle), Kevin Whitby, Kirby Whitby (Cindy), Ronald Whitby (Benita) and Patricia Whitby; twenty-three grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; sister, Esther Christian; brother-in-law, Samuel Tyler; sister-in-law, Louise Whitby, and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2019, in Whiting’s Chapel. Interment to follow in Morning Star Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Whitby may be viewed in the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of his service on Friday.
Professional services entrusted to the staff of Whiting’s Funeral Home, 7005 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, Virginia 23185. 757-229-3011. whitingsfuneralhome.com
