Alfred Leroy Simons Sr.

June 30, 1948 ~ February 17, 2021 (age 72)


Alfred Leroy Simons Sr., of Williamsburg, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, with his children at his side.  He was born on June 30, 1948, to the late James and Carrie Simons.

Alfred attended Bruton Heights School where he was a safety patrolman and graduated as a proud member of the Class of ’66.  He furthered his education at Thomas Nelson Community College. Alfred enlisted in and retired from the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a military policeman. He was employed with Eastern State Hospital as a Charge Aide and retired from the Naval Weapons Station as a Material Handler Specialist.

At a young age, Alfred joined Little Zion Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee, member of the Ebony Gospel Chorus, and an active member of the Hospitality Committee.

On December 7, 1985, Alfred married the late Deborah Conyers-Simons and to that union they were blessed with one daughter, Sherri Nicole Simons. He was also the proud father of Alfred Leroy Simons Jr of Forrest City, AR and Stacy Linette Brown (Eric) of Marion, AR.

Alfred touched the lives of many people. He considered himself the “Eye Opener.” He was very active in his community, often transporting seniors to doctor appointments and assisting them when needed.  Alfred was the Past Master of Maceo Consolidated Lodge #124, a member of the American Legion Post #368, the Naval Weapons Station Retiree’s Club, and was a faithful member of The Williamsburg Men’s Club until his health began to fail.  His favorite pastime activities were playing cards with his best friend William “Billy” Jones and hanging with his friends, Morris Roberts Jr. and the late Rudolph “Rudy” Arrington II.

In addition to his parents and late wife, Alfred was predeceased by two brothers, James Jr. and Joseph Simons. He is survived by his son Alfred Simons, Jr.; daughters, Stacy Brown (Eric), and Sherri Simons; six grandchildren, Takeria, Jasmine, and Asia Simons, Marcus and Sydney Wilson, and Justin Brown; two great-grandchildren, Kingston and Aiden; grand-dog, Bentley; brothers, Milton Simons (Barbara) of Oklahoma, Tony Edmonds (Vida) of Norfolk, William Simons, Darryle Simons, and Rev. Franklin Simons, all of Williamsburg; two sisters, Valerie Otey (Rawlin) of New Kent and Arlene Collins (Michael) of Williamsburg; brother-in-law, Anthony Conyers Jr (Cressondra) of Williamsburg; sisters-in-law, Rev. Shelia Simons of Newport News and Earthel Foster (Joseph) of Upper Marlboro, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2021, at Whiting's Funeral Home.  Interment with military honors will follow in Little Zion Baptist Church cemetery.  Due to the current health pandemic, only 50 people may be in attendance with facial coverings and social distancing requirements.  Facebook Livestream will be available at the start of the service.  Mr. Simons may be viewed on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
