Audrey M. Dorsey

On Friday January 7, 2022, God called our beloved Audrey M. Dorsey home.  She was born on August 1, 1932, in Springfield, Massachusetts to the late Richard Jones and Estella McBride. 

As a child she moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, where she received her formal education in the Williamsburg Public School system. Audrey graduated from Bruton Heights School in 1949. She was baptized at an early age and attended Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, Williamsburg, Va.  She later attended First Baptist Church for 40 years. While there, she served on the auxiliary board, usher board and was willing to accept any other task she was asked to do.

On October 16, 1955, she married Rev. Robert Dorsey and from that union, 3 children were born, Rommel, Gwendolyn and Robin Dorsey. 

Audrey was employed as a certified nursing assistant for 15 years at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Va. She retired in 1998. She enjoyed traveling by bus, plane, train or ship. She traveled to London, Paris, Jamaica, Bahamas and most of the Caribbean Islands. She traveled throughout the United States, such as Massachusetts, Texas, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Nevada, New York, Washington D C, California and Georgia. Audrey enjoyed gardening and the company of her two dogs, Fluffy and Autumn. She was a proud, strong willed person and very independent. She did things her way until the onset of her illness. When she could no longer live alone, she moved to Dominion Village in Williamsburg in 2017. At Dominion Village, she enjoyed playing dominoes, bingo and participated in all the arts and crafts activities.

She was preceded in death by her husband, children, stepmother, Mary Jones, 7 sisters, Gloria Cohen, Claudette Scott, Gwendolyn Mackey, Loretta Freeman, Joan Hunt, Audrey Ashby and Dorothy Scott.

She leaves behind a sister, Barbara Williams; devoted cousin, Ethel Hill; niece, Celena Brown (Raymond); devoted BFF, Jennifer Faison; devoted caretaker, Ebony Bartlett; and other extended family and friends.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at Whiting’s Funeral Home.  Mrs. Dorsey may be viewed from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Facial coverings are required at all services.

Audrey requested that all donations be made to the Sickle Cell Foundations in memory of her children, Rommel, Gwendolyn, and Robin Dorsey.
