Bessie Hundley Obituary

Bessie Elizabeth Jones Hundley, 72, of Williamsburg, unexpectedly departed this earth to her heavenly home on Wednesday, May 13, 2020. On September 1, 1947, Bessie was the seventh of ten children born to the late Alma F. and Robert Elwood Jones, Sr.  in Charles City County, Va.

Her lifelong journey of religious faith began at an early age at Little Elam Baptist Church, Charles City, VA.  Later in life, Bessie attended Mount Zion Baptist Church in Charles City where she was a member of the Tones of Zion Singers. After moving to Williamsburg, she joined St. John Baptist Church where she was a member of the Usher Board; serving as president for ten years.  She was also the chairperson for the Women's Day Committee and a member of the Hospitality Ministry. Bessie thoroughly enjoyed being an active member of the family choir, the R.E. Jones Inspirations.

Bessie was educated in the Charles City County Public Schools.  She worked many years for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, CVS, and twenty-six years for Dr. Tommy Johnson.

Bessie enjoyed cooking, especially her famous scratch rolls and cakes. She was an avid bowler and was a member of several leagues over the years. She loved bingo and would watch her board and your board and would call bingo if you missed it!  Bessie will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and those she touched throughout her life. She always showed her strong belief in God was always with her. We know that she is with the Lord and is no longer suffering.

Bessie is preceded in death by three siblings, Alvin, Emma and Josh, and a special nephew, Alfred Jr.  She will forever be remembered as the beloved wife of Merritt Hundley III; the adored mother of Iris J. McRae (Juan); the cherished nana of Timothy, Sean (Nikala), Ryan (Chelsea), Layla, Joey, and Dominique; the great-grandnana to Christian, NaShai, Sa’nai, Prince, Niko, Maverick and Jaedon; dear sister to Robert Jr. (Lucy), James (Shirley), Joseph (Sandra), Alfred (Maxine), Alleana and Mattie; loving godmother to Donna D. Duncan, LaChelle Roberts and Tandra Jones; treasured aunt to thirteen nephews, eighteen nieces, including three faithful nieces, Darlene Washington, Sheila Brown and Shirley Morman. Her absence will also leave a void in the lives of a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Hundley may be viewed from 12:00 noon until 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2020, at Whiting's Funeral Home.  A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, May 23, 2020, at St. John Baptist Church.  Due to the current health pandemic, all attendees are to remain in their vehicles.  Facebook live-stream will be available for this service.
