Betty Lou Phillips

On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, God called home His faithful servant, Betty Lou Phillips, at The Hospice House of Williamsburg. Betty was born to Carrie and Samuel Harrison. 

Betty was educated at the James City County Training Center. 

In 1983, Betty married the late William H. Phillips Sr. in Nashville, Tennessee. This union blessed her with three children, Cassandra (who predeceased her), William, and Winston. 

Betty was employed at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation as a Hostess for 45 years.  After her retirement, she was a Childcare worker at the Kindercare Learning Center. Betty loved to greet and interact with visitors and their children.  Although quiet in spirit, she was a joy to be around and loved her family. She was very supportive of all. 

Betty joined Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and was a very dedicated and supportive member until her health declined. She loved her First Lady Sharmaine Ellis. They talked all the time. She also had other members whom she was very close to and who were very supportive. 

Betty had several names she was called: Ma, Grandma, and Aunt Bet Lou. She answered to all these names with a smile. 

Betty will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She leaves to cherish her memories sons, William Phillips Jr. (Cheryl) and Winston Phillips; grandchildren, Katherine Danielle Warren, Jynnifer Phillips Smith (Jamal), Branden Phillips, Kendel Phillips, and Nia Phillips; great-grandchildren, Jonathan Smith and Jackson Smith; brother-in-law James Johnson (Diane); sister-in-law Garri Johnson; sister Roberta English (Samuel); and several nieces and nephews who supported her as well. 

A service to celebrate Betty's life will be held at Noon on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Phillips may be viewed in the church on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m. until the hour of her service.
