Carl E. Berkley

May 6, 1948 ~ January 10, 2024 (age 75) 75 Years Old

Carl Berkley Obituary

Carl E. Berkley was born the eldest son of the late Deacon Robert L. and Vernell Berkley on May 6, 1948. He answered the Master's call on January 10, 2024.

"Bud," as he was affectionately called by family and friends, confessed Christ at an early age and joined St. John Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee before his health began to decline. He was educated in the Williamsburg-James City County school system. After graduating he joined the United States Army and later the Army Reserve. He retired from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation after forty-eight years of service in the landscaping department.

In 1971 he was joined in holy matrimony to Viola Fenton of Williamsburg.  They enjoyed fifty-three years of marital bliss.

Carl enjoyed his family, watching Westerns, and talking about the Word of God. He was a man of great faith and his fight in the midst of his struggle encouraged others around him. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved his humor and humble spirit.

He was preceded in death by his oldest son Anthony Walker; sister Alice Berkley; and brother Harold Berkley. He leaves to cherish his fond memories with his wife Viola Berkley; sons, Bruce Walker Sr., Antonio Walker Sr. (Jearl), Leslie Berkley, and Stanley Berkley; two daughters, Carla Berkley and Lamonica Berkley; sixteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Berkley, Mary Berkley, and Bernice Lett; brother Kenneth Berkley; sisters-in-law, Burnett Jones (Joseph), Novella Palmer (Darnell), and Alberta Broddus; brother-in-law Edmond Braxton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A service to celebrate Bud’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., on January 18, 2024, at Bethel Restoration Center. Mr. Berkley may be viewed on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Whiting's funeral home.
