Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.
2 Corinthians 1:3
God called our beloved Cecil Joseph Collier home to be with Him on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at home, surrounded by his family. His life began on August 8, 1931, the son of the late Leland Tillmon and Ronnie Collier.
At an early age, Cecil confessed his love for Christ at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Williamsburg, VA. Later in life, he joined Colossian Baptist Church in Newport News, VA.
He was educated in the York County Public Schools and retired from Eastern State Hospital as a Housekeeping Supervisor.
During his lifetime, he enjoyed playing poker, owned a nightclub, and truly loved restoring and reselling cars. Cecil would joke about how he was a wonderful matchmaker and how many couples he introduced that are still together today.
Cecil was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Collier; son, Joseph C. “Stinka” Collier; and siblings, James E. Green, Mary E. Brown, and John David Collier.
He leaves to treasure fond memories his son, Michael A. Collier; daughter, Colette Roots (Daryl); grandchildren, Lolita Crew, Cortez Roots (Shinece), DeCarlos King (Patricia), Terrell Gaines, and Cordney Roots; great-grandchildren, Marquis Smith, Maurice Smith, Kaira Savoy, Ayana Crew, Kahran Roots, Corniya Taylor, Naida Gaines, Alexis King, Matthew Gaines, Adian Gaines, Caiden Roots, Kamren Roots, and Kaysan Roots; brother-in-law, Lewis M. Tyler (Diane); sister-in-law, Linda Walters; nieces and nephews, Paulette Jones, Louise Terry Mayfield, Kenneth Brown (Renee), Garland Lucas, Karen Blocker (Martin), Vernon Lewis, and Nicholas Tyler; special brother; Oscar Howard; special son, Leon Simpson (Cindy); special first cousins, Ciclley Johnson, Edith Wallace, and Shirley Wallace (Lloyd); and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, extended family, and special friends who called him "Pop" or "uncle," and whom he loved dearly.
A service to celebrate Cecil's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Colossian Baptist Church. Livestream will be available at the beginning of the service. Interment to follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Mr. Collier may be viewed in the church on Tuesday beginning at 9:00 a.m. Facial coverings are required.
