Charles Nathaniel Rainey was born on March 23, 1934, to the union of the late Thurston and Ethel Rainey, of Yorktown, Virginia.
He attended the Yorktown Training School, in Yorktown and was a retired Racehorse Trainer.
He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and many friends who stopped by to check on him. After retirement, he continued to attend horse races with fellow co-workers and friends. He also cherished family gatherings. He will truly be missed by his family and friends.
On Thursday, February 27, 2020, God dispatched his angels to Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News for a special assignment. That assignment was to bring our beloved Charles to his heavenly home for eternal rest.
He was preceded in death by his former wife, Alma Rainey, son, Bobby Rainey, daughter, Joanne Rainey, and brothers, Clarence Rainey and James Slaughter. His precious memories will forever remain with his children, Peggy Dillard (Maynard), Tracey Sumblin (Richard), Deborah Combs, Douglas Rainey (Melinda), and Charles Rainey (Wanda); grandchildren, Candace Dillard, Dominique Rainey, Alexis Rainey, and Morris Combs; great-grandchildren, Novella, Dalton, and Kylee; two sisters, Susie Wright and Pearl Perrin; great-aunt, Gladys Rainey; and a host of nieces, nephews and caring friends.
A service to celebrate Charles’ life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2020, in Whiting’s Chapel, with the Reverend Wayne S. Tucker, officiating. Interment to follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Family and friends to assemble by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Rainey may be viewed from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
