Charles Sylvester Taylor

On the morning of July 20, 2026, the heavenly angels came to the bedside of Charles Sylvester Taylor to inform him that his assignment on earth was complete, and his heavenly home awaits him for rest.

Charles Sylvester Taylor, affectionately known as “Chub,” “Chubby,” or “Uncle Charlie”, was born on November 25, 1953, to the late Oliver Lee and Carrie Marie Taylor.

Chub confessed Christ as his personal savior and joined Zion Baptist Church, Lightfoot, VA.  Under the leadership of the late Rev. L. F. Williams, Chub was a member of the L. F. Williams Gospel Choir, which sang in various churches and participated in various programs. Chub received his call to serve as a deacon under the leadership of Bishop Carlton B. Johnson and was ordained on April 20, 1997. He served faithfully in many roles in God’s house, including Vice Chair of the Trustee Ministry, member of the Gospel Choir and Male Chorus, and participant in the Zion Fishers of Men Ministry, Bus/Van Ministry, Parking Lot Ministry, and Usher/Greeter Ministry. He transported children to Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and also helped maintain the church lawn. Chub was Zion’s “Mr. Fix-It.” Whenever he saw something that needed to be done, he did it willingly, without hesitation or complaint. Chub also had the honor of singing with his wife Yvette in the J. B. Gospel Singers (Jerusalem Baptist Church) in Charles City, VA.

His motto was “I Am A servant in God’s House.”

Chub graduated from Lafayette High School with the class of 1972. After graduating from high school, Chub worked for the Williamsburg-James City County School System as a Bus Driver and then at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. In 1982, Chub worked at Ball Metal Corporation and retired in April 2011.

Chub’s favorite songs were This Morning When I Rose by The Mississippi Mass Choir and Something about the name Jesus by Rance Allen. Chub’s most memorable moments at Zion Baptist Church were participating in a Fashion Show along with several other men from the church wearing purple suits, sunglasses and lip-syncing to “My Girl” by the Temptations. What a moment we will never forget!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver Lee and Carrie Marie Taylor; his brothers, Alfred Taylor, Willis “Buck” Taylor, David Taylor, and Bruce “Henry” Taylor; his in-laws, Deacon Percell and Deaconess Irene Brown; his sisters-in-law, Barbara B. Jackson and Brenda R. Brown; and his brother-in-law, Chief Master Sgt. James Holmes.

Chub’s legacy will forever be loved and cherished by his loving and dedicated wife of thirty-eight years, Yvette B. Taylor; loving, dedicated best friend and son, Alex Charles Taylor; his goddaughter, Tashawndae (Missy) Baker; sister Carolyn T. Wynne; foster sister  Myrtle  L. Melvin; brother, Milton “Wardell” Taylor (Sonia); sisters-in-law; Barbara C. Taylor and Joyce B. Holmes; brother-in-Law  Kevin L. Jackson; Uncle Horace Jones; special nephew Isaac “Dek” Taylor; A special friend whom he shared a special bond with and call him brother, Deacon John Morman; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends.

A service to celebrate Chub's life will be held at Noon on Friday, July 24, 2026, at Bethel Restoration Center, with a viewing beginning at 11:00 a.m.  Interment to follow in Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
