Cornell Briscoe Obituary

Cornell Jon Briscoe was born on April 20, 1951, to Augustus and Irma Briscoe, in Brooklyn, New York.  Early in the morning on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, he traded in his earthly labor for eternal rest.

Cornell attended Alfred E. Zampella School (also known as PS #27), John Philip Sousa Junior High School (formerly known as JHS 142), and Chelsea Career and Technical Education High School in Brooklyn, New York.  He attended technical school because he loved taking things apart and reassembling them.  As a young boy, he was active in the Cadets and loved to look at things through a microscope. He also had a passion for antique train sets.

In 1995, Cornell met the love of his life, Lynn Mungin; they married on December 26, 2019.  He and Lynn enjoyed twenty-eight years of love and happiness together.

Cornell worked for the Yellow Cab Company for twenty years while living in Brooklyn, New York.  He later relocated to Virginia where he attended the Colonial Williamsburg’s chef apprentice program where he worked for eighteen years.  He later worked for Camp Peary, a U.S. military reservation in York County near Williamsburg, Virginia, for sixteen years.  He retired in 2021.

Cornell enjoyed watching the New York Knicks (his favorite basketball team) and the New York Giants play. He enjoyed listening to old school rhythm and blues songs.  He brought life to family events as he was known for his excellent cooking skills and his fiery comments.  Cornell will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Cornell is preceded in death by his father, Augustus Briscoe; son, Cornell Douglas; and daughter, Deana Briscoe.  He leaves to cherish his fond memories his wife, Lynn Mungin; mother, Irma Briscoe of Surry, Virginia; siblings, Pamela Beale (Rickey) of Surry, Virginia, David Briscoe (Pat) of Williamsburg, Virginia, and James Briscoe (Ann) of South Carolina; children, Tiwana Brown and Shariff Brown, both of New York, and Shannon Briscoe and Tia Murphy, both of Virginia; aunts, Rose Campbell of Bronx, New York and Pamela Tolsen of Newport News, Virginia; uncle, Johnny Minns (Grace) of Columbia, Maryland; brothers-in-law,Thomas Clarke and Barney Mungin who was his best friend of Virginia; godson, Tyran Evans; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friends.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Surry.  A visitation for Mr. Briscoe will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.  Facial coverings are recommended for all services.
