Darrell Sedgwick peacefully entered eternal rest on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. Darrell was born on April 26, 1963, in Newport News, Virginia, to the late John Thomas Sedgwick and Janice Wilkerson Sedgwick. Raised with the values of hard work, loyalty, and love for family, Darrell grew into a man whose quiet strength and caring heart left a lasting impression on everyone privileged to know him.
He graduated from York High School in 1981 and later became a skilled concrete finisher, a profession that reflected his strong work ethic, dedication, and pride in doing quality work. Throughout his career, Darrell earned the respect of coworkers and friends through his dependability, craftsmanship, and willingness to help others.
Darrell was a man who appreciated life's simple blessings. He found peace in the outdoors, especially while fishing and hunting, where he enjoyed the beauty of God's creation and the quiet moments that came with it.
More than anything, Darrell loved his family. Whether sharing stories, laughter, or simply spending time together, his greatest joy came from those he loved most. He valued family above all else and treasured every opportunity to create memories with them. Those who knew Darrell will remember his quiet nature, his resilient spirit, and his unwavering love for the people closest to him. He taught us that strength is often shown through perseverance, loyalty, and simply being there for the people you love.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas Sedgwick and Janice Wilkerson Sedgwick, and by his beloved sisters, Alice Briddell and Barbara Ann Jacob.
Darrell leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving daughter, Karren Douglas; his treasured granddaughters, Dayjiah Douglas, Ny’Aijiah Kerns, Zakiya Douglas, and twins, Trinity & Serinity Reynolds; his bonus grandchildren, Keon Tyler, Allana Chisman, and Keyontae Carter, who brought immeasurable joy to his life; his devoted siblings, Rebecca Sedgwick, Jason Sedgwick, and Helen Sampson; his beloved aunts, Alice Wilkerson and Maxine Robinson; his brother-in-law, Howard Jacob Jr.; his special friend, Loretta Carter; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, lifelong friends, and all whose lives were touched by his kindness and love.
A service to celebrate Darrell’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Whiting’s Funeral Home, with a viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Professional services have been entrusted to the staff of Whiting’s Funeral Home, 7005 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, Virginia 23185. 757-229-3011 whitingsfuneralhome.com
