Deacon Emeritus Edward Atkins Sr. Obituary

Deacon Emeritus Edward Lee Atkins Sr. was born on March 20, 1926, the oldest child of Willie and Annie Atkins. He received his heavenly reward peacefully on December 10, 2020.

Edward Lee received and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a very young age at Gilfield Baptist Church.  There, he was active in Sunday School, the Men’s Choir, and Deacon Board. He later joined Little Elam Baptist Church where he faithfully served 63 years as a Deacon before being elevated to Deacon Emeritus in March 2017.

Edward Lee attended Wayside Elementary School before having to leave to take care of his siblings. He was a United States Army, World War II veteran. After being honorably discharged from the military, he went on to work for David M. Lea, Co.  He was later employed with the Continental Can Company/Stone Container, retiring in 1985. After retiring, Edward Lee became a school bus driver for the Charles City School system. In his spare time, he became well-known throughout the county for his wood-working skills.

Edward Lee was a friend to everyone, always willing to lend a hand to anyone he came in contact with throughout his life’s journey. His generosity knew no bounds. Whenever you met him you were never the same afterwards. Edward Lee was a gem, and everyone who ever met him loved him.

His precious memories and devoted love will forever be cherished by his wife of 72 years, Edith C.; two sons, Edward Jr. (devoted friend, Delores) and Marvin Sr. (Helen); eight grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren; brother, Adolph; sisters, Willie Stith, Anna O. Lane, and Eunice Earl; and a host of nieces, nephews, a very special friend, “Lil John” and many other friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2020, at Whiting’s Funeral Home.  Current COVID state-mandated guidelines will apply. Dea. Atkins may be viewed from 1:00 p.m until 5:00 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
