Deacon Floyd "Tinker" Parker Obituary

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in His way.” Psalm 37:23

Early Tuesday morning, January 2, 2024, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Floyd Nelson Parker was called from his earthly labor to his heavenly reward. Floyd was affectionately known as “Tinker” throughout the Williamsburg area and community.  He was born on August 10, 1944, to the late Purnell and Ruth Price Parker of Williamsburg, Virginia. He was the third of four children and was preceded in death by his brother, David Parker.

Floyd graduated from Bruton Heights School in 1962. He played football throughout high school and was considered a “star” football player. In 1966, he enlisted in the United States Army and spent most of his Army career in Germany, where he continued to play his favorite sport. Floyd worked for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation before being employed by Anheuser Busch, in which he retired after twenty-five years of service.

In June 1971, he was joined in holy matrimony to Verne Hall. They enjoyed fifty-two and a half years of marriage.

Floyd enjoyed helping others and didn’t hesitate to do so whenever and wherever he could. He was an active and faithful member of Union Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he joined as a youth. At the time of his passing, he was chairman of the Deacon Board, president of the Men’s Chorus, and member of the Adult Choir and Trustee Board. He also taught Sunday School and was faithful and active in Bible Study. He was president of the Peninsula Baptist Deacons Union.

He enjoyed hunting and was a past member of hunting clubs in Charles City and Wakefield, VA. He preferred spending his time “outside” watching the deer and squirrels in the yard.  Floyd “Tinker” will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his loving wife and faithful companion, Verne; two sons, Terence Parker of Myrtle Beach, SC and Sterling Parker (Anjalie) of Culpeper, VA; three grandsons, Tristan Parker of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Styles Parker and Titus Parker, both of Culpeper, VA; brother, Willie Parker (Deloris) of Williamsburg, VA; one sister, Ruth Pryor (Abraham) of King George, VA; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; special walking buddies, Phyllis Jones and Henrietta Morman; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A homegoing celebration will be held at Noon on Monday, January 8, 2024.  Interment with military honors to follow in Williamsburg Memorial Park.  Mr. Parker may be viewed on Sunday, January 7, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 pm. in Whiting's Funeral Home.
