Deacon Robert Hall Sr. Obituary

On Thursday evening, January 28, 2021, our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Robert Lee Hall Sr., was called home from his earthly labor to heavenly reward. He was born January 26, 1922, to the late William Hall Sr. and Rebecca Cook Hall, in York County, Virginia.

“Uncle Robert”, as he was affectionately known, was educated at the Oak Grove Training School. As a teenager, he confessed Christ as his Personal Savior and joined Oak Grove Baptist Church. He joined the Senior Choir in 1947, was ordained as a deacon in 1959, and was a member of the Men’s Chorus. He was a faithful member and worked tirelessly for the betterment of the church until his death.

On February 22, 1947, he was united in holy matrimony to the former Elizabeth Wallace. Unto this union, four loving children were born. They enjoyed 51 years of marital bliss.

Dad loved people and his community. He joined the James City Lodge in 1958, serving as Worshipful Master. He later joined the Maceo Consolidate Lodge. He was a founding member of the James City Men’s Chorus which was organized in 1961. He was a member of the Peninsula Baptist Deacons Union, Board member for the Housing Partnership, faithful member of the United Fellowship Choir, the Neighborhood Council of Williamsburg, and Life Member of the NAACP where he served as chairman of the Political Action Committee.

He loved music and singing. He was often asked to sing solos at funerals and other programs.

Dad was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. He later retired from the Naval Weapons Station after thirty-three years of service and Walnut Hills Baptist Church after thirty-four years of service.

In his later years, he was blessed with the opportunity to travel. He visited New York and Canada several times. He also enjoyed cruises to the Bahamas, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

He was predeceased by his wife, seven sisters and brothers, and a grandson, Lenox Cooke Jr. His fond and precious memories will forever be cherished by his children, Verne Parker (Floyd), Barbara Wright (Clinton), Shearline Melvin (Irvin), and Rob L. Hall Jr.; nine grandchildren, Kory Hall, Michelle Lindsey (Stanford) whom he raised as a daughter, Terence Parker, Bernard Lewis (Kristi), Deric Cooke (Angela), Sterling Parker (Anjalie), Brigetta Hall, Sean Martinez (Laura), and Jamar Melvin (Shakarra); twenty-four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; “adopted daughters”, Maria Norman, Brenda Howard, Chorine Williams, and Betty Harrington; two nieces, Ethel Brown and Shirley Dillard; nephew, Arthur Wynn Sr.; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, and other loving and caring relatives and friends.

A Homegoing Celebration will be held at noon Thursday, February 04, 2021, at Williamsburg Community Chapel. Livestream will be available at the start of the service.  Interment with military honors to follow at Williamsburg Memorial Park.  A walk-through viewing will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.  COVID-19 precautions will be in place.
