Deaconess Geraldine Word was born on April 4, 1953, in Williamsburg, Virginia, to the late Daisy White and the late Gerald E. Jones. She departed this life for her eternal journey at 4:48 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2021, in Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News, Virginia.
She attended the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools and graduated from Bruton Heights High School.
On January 16, 1976, Geraldine married the love of her life, Deacon Charles A. Word. They were blessed to raise three beautiful children, Anthony L. White, Angela L. White, and LaShaunda R. Word.
She worked as a Nurse’s Aide at Williamsburg Community Hospital and the Pines Convalescent Center. She later worked at the Mulberry Inn and retired from Canon U.S.A. Incorporated on May 1, 2017.
Deaconess Word loved the Lord. She fellowshipped with Colossian Baptist Church for over ten years, True Vine Baptist Church for eight years, Living Waters Tabernacle Baptist Church for six years, and at the time of her death Little Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Hallie Richardson Jr.
Geraldine was a loving mother, wife, sister, and friend. She was a fantastic cook who loved to travel and sew quilts. Singing in the alto section of the choir brought her so much joy. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her, but we find peace in knowing that she is resting in the arms of Jesus.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Ellen Oliver; brother, Milton Jones; brothers-in-law, John Word Jr and James Word; and father-in-law, John L. Word.
Along with her husband and children, Geraldine’s memory will forever remain with her grandchildren, Aijah, Jaishon, Jordynn, and Anthony Jr; grand puppy, Stormy; siblings, Alice Billings, Gerald Jones Jr, and Robert White; mother-in-law, Lillie Mae Word, sisters-in-law, Helen Burton, Mamie Hudson, Joyce Word, Alice Pickney, and Mildred King; brothers-in-law, Allen Word (Elaine) and Thomas Word; special friends, Victoria Lassiter, Eunice Wallace, Evangelist Debra Shields; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 21, 2021, in Whiting’s Funeral Home. Due to the current health pandemic, only 50 people may be in attendance. Livestream will be available for this service. Mrs. Word may be viewed starting two hours before her service on Friday.
