On Saturday, November 30, 2024, God called home Demetrius Carlos Phipps, Sr., also known as “Meat" or "Dee.” He was born on January 10, 1960, to the late Daniel and Velma Phipps of Newport News, VA.
He grew up in downtown Newport News on Oak Avenue before moving uptown to the Stoneybrook neighborhood. He attended Denbigh High School, where he was an excellent basketball player, and met his high school sweetheart, Ramona Bradley Phipps, whom he later married. To this union, two wonderful children were born.
Demetrius loved life and had a way of helping others enjoy the moments spent in his presence. He enjoyed nature and spent a lot of his leisure time fishing and taking long walks. When he wasn’t enjoying the outdoors, you could find him watching movies or his favorite football team, the LA Raiders.
Demetrius is preceded in death by his father, Daniel Phipps; mother, Velma Phipps; and wife, Ramona Phipps. In 2009, he was given another opportunity to experience love when he met Beatriz Molina.
He leaves to cherish his memories his son Demetrius Phipps, Jr. (Jackie) and daughter LaShawnda Seay (Alvin), all of Newport News, VA; five grandchildren, Bryce Phipps, Adeja Madison, Josiah Seay, Joelle Seay, Jianna Seay; brothers, Daniel Phipps, Jr. of Hampton, VA and Jonathan Phipps (Cynthia) of Lawrenceville, GA; sister Missy Thompson, of Hampton, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many caring friends.
A funeral service will be held at Noon on Friday, December 13, 2024, at Whiting's Funeral Home. Mr. Phipps may be viewed on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
Professional services have been entrusted to the staff of Whiting's Funeral Home, 7005 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, Virginia 23185. 757-229-3011 whitingsfuneralhome.com
