Donald McGriff

On August 1, 1946, Donald was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, to the late Willie and Mary McGriff.  He was reunited with his parents, sister Gloria Jean McGriff and grandmother Gracie Smith, on Monday, May 10, 2021.

He attended the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools graduating with the class of 1964 from Bruton Heights School, where he played on the basketball and football teams.  Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Vietnam.  He was Honorably Discharged on December 12, 1967.

Upon returning to Williamsburg, Donald worked several jobs, from being a waiter at the Williamsburg Inn to working as a security guard at the Cheatham Annex Naval Base.  At the time of his passing, he was employed by the College of William & Mary, working in the Residence Life department for twenty-eight years.

Donald loved music, reading, good food, and nice clothes.  He will truly be missed by all who knew him.

He leaves to cherish his fond memories, nine children, Shawn McGriff, Tara Ashlock, Donna Frazier, Dominique Edmunds, Danitia Frazier, Antwan Hill, Derrick Morris, Kimberly Long, and Shanice White; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives, and friends.

A funeral service will be held at noon Monday, May 17, 2021, in Whiting’s Funeral Home, with a viewing starting two hours prior.  Due to the current health pandemic, only 50 people may be in attendance for the service with facial coverings and social distancing requirements.  Livestream will be available at the beginning of the service.  Interment with military honors to follow in Cedar Grove cemetery.
