Edith Bowman Obituary

Edith Simpson Bowman, affectionately called “Sug,” departed this life to forever live in the mansion that Jesus promised her on Saturday, February 22, 2025.  Her earthly journey began on July 29, 1934, the daughter of the late Alfred and Edith Roberts Simpson.

A lifelong resident of the Williamsburg-James City County area, Sug was a former member of the Eastern Star Youth Chapter and the Blossomettes Social Club.  She was educated in the Williamsburg/James City County schools, graduating from Bruton Heights High School in 1952, and later obtained a nursing degree from the MCV/Richmond City School of Practical Nursing. Her employment began as a nurse in the Medical College of Virginia Pediatric department and later in the Geriatric department of Eastern State Hospital.  She retired after thirty-one years of dedicated service.

On May 11, 1964, Edith was united in holy matrimony to the late John Edward Bowman.  This union was blessed with a daughter Johnnis.

Sug loved reading, and every evening, she faithfully watched Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy.  She was loved by many and was the person everyone would go to when they needed to talk about their problems or just to vent.  She will truly be missed by all who knew her.

Her memories will forever be cherished by her daughter Johnnis Ayala (Alex); grandson Cameron Bowman (Giovanni); great-granddaughters, Julie, Ivi, and Legion; godchildren, Darrell Simpson, Shellice Graves, Lorenzo Johnson; devoted cousins, Helen Simpson, Audrey Jones, Doris Randall, Karen Bartlett, Wayne Jackson, and Joanne Johnson; lifelong friend Camellia Druitt; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A graveside ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 28, 2025, at Williamsburg Memorial Park.  At Sug’s request, there will be no viewing.
