Edna Beatrice Roberts

Edna Beatrice Roberts peacefully departed this life for eternal rest on Saturday, October 2, 2021, in her sleep at Consulate Health Care of Williamsburg, VA. She was born on July 14, 1929, the eldest child of the late John Wise Sr. and Redell Roberts.

Edna began her education at the James City County Training School in 1935, later enrolling in the Bruton Heights School and graduating in 1946. She was the first president of the combined James City County/Bruton Heights School Alumni Association. She was a member of Colonial Temple #380 Daughters of the Elk for more than 40 years, where she held the offices of Financial Secretary and Past Daughter Ruler. She was a seamstress for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for many years, retiring in 1983.

Edna loved her Grove community and served on the Grove Recreation Association. She was a member of Little Zion Baptist Church.  Later in life, she joined St. John Baptist Church, Williamsburg.  She enjoyed crocheting, reading, and researching family history. She will be sorely missed, and her legacy will never be forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Elmer R. and Calvin L. Roberts. She is survived by her son, John D. Roberts "Peter"; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brothers, John W. Roberts Jr. (Alice) and Morris V. Roberts (Betsy); sisters, Jacquelyn R. Gardner (Dennis) and Delphine R. Driver; and many other caring family members and friends.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at Whiting’s Funeral Home.  Facial coverings are required for the service. Livestream will be available at the beginning of the service.  At the request of Ms. Roberts, there will be no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the James City County/Bruton Heights Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 2336 Williamsburg, VA 23185, to help support students graduating from our local high schools and the Bruton District of York County.
