“God saw the load was getting heavy, And the hills were hard to climb.
So, He gently closed her weary eyelids, And whispered, “Peace Be Thine.”
Florence Evelyn Jones Piggott was born on January 12, 1931, in James City County, to the late Deacon Samuel T. and Lucy Ellen Jones. She departed this life on Thursday, July 29, 2021, in a peaceful sleep at home.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elmore Piggott Jr.; daughter, Ellen Carletha Piggott; sister, Louise Bassett; special friends, Norma White, Marie Brown, and Helen W. Dandridge.
She attended the St. John Training School. At an early age, she joined Chickahominy Baptist Church, attending faithfully until the Covid-19 pandemic and her health began to fail. She loved her church; a few years ago, she was named the “Mother of the Church”. She was also a former member of the Order of Eastern Star Maceo Lodge #39 and a former member of Shiloh Baptist Church Missionary Ministry.
Florence was a quiet, sweet person who loved to keep everything clean and sparkling. She enjoyed sending cards to family and friends and loved taking care of her flowers. She adored her grandson, Jay, and Alice, who always gifted her with whatever she desired. She loved receiving the many cards sent to her from Omari, her great-granddaughter.
Florence worked at Colonial Williamsburg in the Costume Design Department and retired from Eastern State Hospital. Her pound cakes, coconut and fruit cakes, her macaroni and cheese, and broccoli casserole will truly be missed.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories, her daughter, Mrs. Barbara Jones (Omar Jr.); two sons, Mark Piggott and Vincent Ashby; grandsons, Omar Jones III (Alice), DeVonte Piggott (Ryan), Darrell Fenton Jr. (Ashley), and Antwanne Carroll (Shantel); granddaughters, Tiera Wallace, Montice Fenton, Jessica Ferguson, and Jewelle Daquin (Eddie); great-grandchildren, Omari Jones, Kamrynn Williams, Kyran Fenton, Kendall Cooke, Ashton Fenton, Addison Fenton, Ariah Fenton, Eleanor Piggott, Journee Daquin, Josiah Daquin, and Destine Vance; sisters, Elsie Lewis, Mary Saunders, Marian Brown, Virginia Braxton (Alvin), Jean Jones, Doris Bailey (Willie), and Helen Bowman; brothers, Sam Jones and Willie Jones (Coloris); special friends, Valerie Morris, Mary E.
