Frederick “Fred” Fields Obituary

Frederick “Fred” Fields entered eternal rest on Sunday, May 24, 2026. He was born on February 7, 1958, in Lackey, Virginia, to the late James Jones and Alice Faye Fields. After the passing of his mother in 1975, Fred and his siblings were lovingly cared for and raised by their aunt, Mary L. Welsh, who was affectionately known to many as “Bug”.

Fred was a proud native of Yorktown and attended York High School. After graduation, he worked a variety of jobs throughout his life and became well-known in the community as the “Brake Master” for his exceptional skill in automotive brake repair. He also faithfully served for many years in maintenance and housekeeping at Saint Bede Catholic Church.

Fred was deeply loved by his family, friends, and community. He enjoyed many hobbies, but fishing was his true passion. Whenever he had the chance, you could find him on the pier with a fishing rod in hand. Known for sharing his catch with others, Fred was the person to call if you wanted fresh, hot fish. His generous spirit, warm personality, and love for those around him will be remembered by all who knew him.

He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Valerie Fields, Judy Fields, and ShiQuita Fields; three brothers, Alvester Fields, Eugene Welsh, and Orlando Welsh; three aunts, Mary Welsh, Rosa Lee Turner, and Lozal Moore.

Fred leaves to cherish his memories his siblings, Sonja Stamps (James), Reginald Fields, Elwood Fields, Eddie Dixon, Kelly Brown, James Walker, Lisa Dixon, Michelle Dixon, Darlene Saunders, Cynthia Taylor, Anthony Welsh (Juanita), Gary Welsh, and Karen Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A funeral service to celebrate Fred's life will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with a viewing beginning at 11:00 a.m.
