George Fagan Drummond — a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, mentor, entrepreneur, and trusted friend.
While our hearts are heavy, they are also full, because George lived a life rich in purpose, service, creativity, and love.
George was born on November 26, 1949, in Philadelphia, to Clyde (deceased) and Mary (deceased) Drummond, the foundation of a close-knit family. He was one of nine siblings (Clyde Jr. (deceased), Suewalla (deceased), Lolita, Allen, Billy, Adrienne, Philip, Harry), and from an early age he learned the values of responsibility, cooperation, and loyalty that would guide his life. He graduated from Germantown High School (1967), already known as someone who worked hard and took initiative — from his days as a paperboy to helping out in his father’s garage, where his appreciation for craftsmanship and problem-solving began to take shape. At the age of 16, his love of photography emerged with one of his proud highlights being his work with the Miss Black America Pageant, where his creative eye and professionalism was born.
George continued his education at Hampton Institute, graduating in 1971, a milestone that reflected both his determination and his belief in building opportunities for himself and others. During his summer breaks, he drove a cab — an experience that gave him endless, colorful stories and deepened his understanding of people from every walk of life. George was always a keen observer of human character, and those cab rides gave him insight that stayed with him forever.
It was also during his Hampton years that George’s passion for photography was nurtured under the mentorship of Reuben Burrell. Through the lens of his camera, George captured beauty, dignity, and history throughout the campus and beyond.
After graduating, George returned to his alma mater, Hampton Institute, where he began his career as a college recruiter, proudly representing the institution that helped shape his path. In this role, he inspired prospective students and shared his deep appreciation for the Hampton experience, leaving a lasting impression on many.
George’s passions extended beyond photography to his love of antique Cadillacs. He delighted in restoring and rehabilitating these classic cars, taking pride in every detail. For George, these cars weren’t just machines — they were experiences meant to be shared. He loved offering friends and family a leisurely drive or making a wedding day feel even more special. Through these moments, he created joy and memories that will live on.
An entrepreneur at heart, George owned and operated a print shop, Drummond Printing, supported by numerous local businesses throughout the Hampton Roads area. He also invested his time and skill into renovating buildings and homes, whether for his own family or to provide affordable rental housing in Newport News and Hampton. He believed in building communities, not just properties.
George was also deeply devoted to his family. He was a doting son and nephew, never too busy to help his parents and elders — always present, whether that meant traveling from Gloucester to Philadelphia or simply being a steady hand when one was needed. Service to family was not an obligation to George; it was an honor.
His dedication extended naturally into the wider community. George was an active member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., where he held leadership roles and upheld its mission of brotherhood and service. He was also engaged with the Men’s Club of Williamsburg, contributed to the Head Start program in Williamsburg, a bellringer for the Salvation Army and served as a Planning Commissioner for James City County — roles that reflected his commitment to civic responsibility and thoughtful leadership.
Professionally, George enjoyed a long and respected career with Allstate Insurance as an insurance broker. He became known throughout the community as a trusted adviser; someone people relied on to guide them through important personal insurance decisions with honesty and care.
Above all, George was a devoted family man. As a father to Traci and Candice, he was always present — never missing school projects, pep talks, milestones, or the everyday moments that truly matter. He encouraged his daughters to be their best, believing in their potential even before they saw it themselves. When George wanted something to happen for his girls, he made it happen — without hesitation and without complaint.
George found profound happiness in his marriage to his beloved wife, Beverly, with whom he made their home in Williamsburg. Their partnership was one of love, mutual respect, and shared purpose — a true example of commitment and companionship.
Later in life, George embraced the role of grandfather with pure joy. He was especially tickled to be actively involved in the lives of Morgan and Sloane — from picking Morgan up from preschool when she lived nearby, to trips to Busch Gardens, and treasured holiday celebrations. Those moments filled him with pride and laughter, and they filled his grandchildren’s lives with unforgettable love.
George lived intentionally. He built, restored, mentored, advised, and loved — fully and generously. His legacy is not only in the businesses he created, the organizations he served, or the community he strengthened, but in the lives he touched so deeply.
Though he may no longer walk beside us, his presence remains — in our values, our memories, and the stories we will continue to tell. May we honor George by living with the same dedication, kindness, and integrity that defined his life.
George is lovingly remembered by his wife, Beverly; daughters, Traci and Candice; and grandchildren, Morgan and Sloane; siblings: Allen, Billy (Holly), Adrian (Muriel), Philip, Harry, and Loleta; mother-in-law Robbie Dobbins; sister-in-law Demonica Johnson (Andrew); brother-in-law Harvey Dobbins, Jr. (Eileen); and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
