George Mack Obituary

George Anthony Mack entered into eternal rest on November 6, 2024. He was born on August 6, 1940, in New York City to the late Carrie Bell and Joe Mack. George was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, friend, and colleague who enriched the lives of everyone he encountered.

George graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in New York City. In 1963 he met and married the late Sylvia Mack. They resided in the Bronx, New York, where they raised their three children.  George was well-respected in the neighborhood as a father figure to many. He possessed a big heart and looked after his neighbors without hesitation. His deep voice and hearty laugh impressed anyone who heard him speak. George was also known for his love of cars. They were kept mechanically and acoustically sound and always pristine.

He spent his career with Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage, Long Island, until retiring in 1994. After retiring, he and his wife relocated to Newport News, VA, to help raise their grandchildren who affectionately call him “Pop Pop.” Soon after his arrival, he began employment with Pinkerton Corporation Risk Management, from which he retired in 2011. He joined Colossian Baptist Church in 2008.

He enjoyed watching NBA basketball and was a loyal and impassioned Boston Celtics fan.

George is preceded in death by his wife of forty-three years, Sylvia (Barr) Mack, and his sisters, Evelyn Harris, Irma Taylor, Ethel Taylor, and Bloneva Clark.

He is survived by his children, Lee Mack (Tina), Lisa Mack-Nelson (David), and Cynthia Parker (Hiram); grandchildren, Nicole Mack, Christopher Parker (Errin), Talysa Parker, Brittany Nelson, Justin Crapper, and Briana Nelson; great-grandchildren Alaywah Wilson, Brianna Wilson, Christopher Parker Jr., and Saniyah Parker; brother, Willie Hawes Jr.; sister, Karyl Hawes.; brother-in-law, Thomas Barr (Gwen);  sister-in-law, Madgalene Barr (James W.); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and loved ones.
