Glenda E. Nixon Scales was born on February 16, 1951, to the late Charles M. and Evelyn Crawford Nixon. She was also raised and nurtured by her grandparents, the late William Ashbie & Lelia Crawford. She answered the call of our Heavenly Father on Monday, June 22, 2020, at her home in Newport News, VA.
Glenda loved serving the Lord. She began her Christian Journey at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Princess Anne, MD. Upon moving to Newport News, Virginia she continued her Christian service at New Beech Grove Baptist Church, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Greater Works Ministries, and finally at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Glenda graduated from the Somerset County Public Schools, Somerset County, Maryland. After relocating to Newport News, she pursued a degree in Nursing; a career from which she retired in 2018 due to failing health.
Glenda was a woman of strong determination, great compassion, and an unfailing belief in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She loved her family dearly and could be counted on to give unwavering support and encouragement in whatever endeavor they attempted. She could also be counted on to offer constructive criticism, to keep you on your toes, because she wanted nothing but the best for those whom she loved. Glenda spent countless hours helping with various church ministries and community service activities. Her warmth, love, and dedication will be greatly missed.
Glenda was preceded in death by two sisters, Cynthia Hayward and Peggy Sturgis; and one brother, Charles W (Mike) Nixon. Her fond and cherished memories will forever live in the hearts of her loving daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Lawrence Stokes; beloved grandchildren, Donovan and Kyera Scales; precious great-grandson, Micah Strozier; three brothers, Kendrick, Joseph, and Floyd Nixon; two sisters, Donna N. King (Willie) and Lelia Nixon; aunt, Joan Crawford Cannon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, longtime friends, and church family.
