On January 15, 2025, at 4:42 pm, the Lord whispered to our beloved Gregory Lee Ransome, “Well done my good and faithful son, you have fought a good battle, now come on home”. He answered his call and entered the “Gates of Heaven” at the Walter Reed Rehabilitation Center, Gloucester, VA with his loving family by his side. Gregory was born on April 26, 1954, to Emmanuel and Margaret Ransome.
Gregory was raised in York County, graduating from York County High School in 1973, and was a part of the Harrods Lane Crew. At an early age, he was baptized and became a member of Grafton Baptist Church Harris Grove under the leadership of Rev. B.W. Morrison.
During his youth, he held many jobs including at the Coast Guard Station in Yorktown, VA, and Driving Taxi #6 alongside his father at Ft. Eustis in Virginia. Gregory was later enlisted in the United States Army where he was later stationed at military base Ft. Dix in New Jersey. During his time in service, Gregory gained many lifelong friends in the military, Leroy Avis, Ricky Mount, and Fletcher. After the military, Gregory went on as a self-employed lumper in the Williamsburg area. “Handsome Ransome," as he was affectionately called, made friends with whoever he met and never forgot a face.
Gregory was preceded in death by his parents Margaret Corbin Ransome and Emmanuel Ransome; sister Cheryl Ann Moore; godmother Ethel Latney; and nephew Leroy Smith.
He leaves to cherish his blessed memories, the love of his life and life partner, Robin “Punch” Canady; son LeMandy A. Ransome; daughters, Jessica S. Canady and Tonya A. Canady; grandchildren, Breanna Canady, Khalil Ransome, and LeMandi Palmer; amazing dog Prynce; sister Gloria Davis; and many nieces and nephews.
In honor of Gregory’s final wishes, there will not be a funeral or memorial service. To all who Loved him and want to honor him, a “Celebration of Life” ceremony with military honors will take place on his birthday, April 26, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Newport News Park-Shelter 10. If you plan on attending, please RSVP Gregory's Celebration.
