Harriette Estelle Fikes was born March 23, 1942, in Albemarle, North Carolina. She was the beloved daughter of the late Iola Gertrude Thomas Stone and John Dudley Stone. She peacefully transitioned into eternal life on July 17, 2026.
Harriette worked in North Carolina as a dietitian at Durham Regional Hospital before moving to Newport News, Virginia, and opening her own in-home daycare center. She loved children and was a true friend to her community. Harriette was a member of First Baptist Church Denbigh for many years. She was a faithful servant of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and spread His word to anyone who would listen.
She was a light to those around her and is cherished by her family and community. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Fikes Sr.; devoted daughter, Stephanie L. Fikes; and her brothers, Edward Stone, Norman Stone, Jessie Stone, Edgar Stone, Robert Stone, and John Stone.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory, her loving son, Gordon E. Fikes Jr. (Wanda) of Emporia, VA; her sister, best friend, and confidant, Dornella Gertrude Stone Hill of Williamsburg, VA; grandchildren, Demetrius T. Fikes (Latasha) of Loganville, GA, Dymond K. Spain of Fayetteville, NC, her partner in crime and right-hand man Afrikka K. Abdul-Haqq of Brooklyn, NY, and Destiny K. Jones of Williamsburg, VA; great-granddaughters, Lyndon N. Fikes and Araryah Cornish, both of Loganville, GA; and last but not least, her bonus daughter Shandra Hammond of Williamsburg, Virginia.
A homegoing celebration service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Whiting's Funeral Home, with a viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m.
