Hazel Marie Johnson Hopkins was born on July 3, 1938, the daughter of the late Ethan Charles Johnson and Louida Conyers Johnson, in Clarendon County, S.C. She was also preceded in death by her five siblings, Francis Johnson, Bessie Lee Johnson Coleman, Oscar Johnson, Ethan Charles Johnson Jr., and John R. Johnson. She departed this life on April 20, 2024, at the Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg.
Hazel grew up in Society Hill S.C., where at an early age, she was baptized at Bethesda Baptist Church. She attended Rosenwald High School in Society Hill. She later relocated to Brooklyn, New York where she married the love of her life the Late Leon Matthews Hopkins. Hazel went back to school to pursue a career in the healthcare field as a Certified Nurse's Assistant. She was employed at Oxford Nursing Home in Brooklyn, New York.
In 1988, Hazel and Leon moved to Williamsburg, Virginia. She worked for several years at Eastern State Hospital and retired from The Williamsburg Landing. As a devoted CNA, she enjoyed taking care of the elderly.
Hazel was a dedicated member of the Historic First Baptist Church of Williamsburg, where she served in the Missionaries Ministry, Usher Board Ministry, and Retiree Ministry.
Hazel was a kind, caring, and devoted mother to her children. She would give you the shirt or the dress off her back if you were in need. Hazel loved her family and did not miss not one family reunion. She spread her kind tender love to her entire family. She was also a phenomenal cook, seamstress, and decorator.
Her precious memories will forever be cherished by her two loving daughters, Gwendolyn T. Cox (Charles Victor) of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Lorraine Cooper-Stovall (Antonio) of Toano, Virginia; her devoted son Russell B. Hopkins of Williamsburg, Virginia; eleven grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
A service to celebrate Hazel’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2024, at the Historic First Baptist Church of Williamsburg. Interment to follow in Williamsburg Memorial Park. Mrs. Hopkins may be viewed on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
