Horace Lee Morning, 90, peacefully passed away on, Monday, May 24, 2021. His life began on February 28, 1931, the son of the late Elizabeth and William Henry Morning, Sr., of Williamsburg, Virginia.
Horace accepted Christ as his savior at an early age and joined First Baptist Church of Williamsburg. He later became a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Horace attended Bruton Heights School. He was a fan of the school’s colors, maroon and gold. In 1952 he joined the United States Army. He served two years before he was honorably discharged in 1954. After returning home he worked at several jobs including Eastern State Hospital where he met his late wife, Shirley Louise Dickerson Morning. They were married on June 18, 1973, and shared 33 wonderful years of marriage before her death in 2007.
Horace had a sense of humor that would keep you laughing. He was funny even when he wasn’t trying to be. He was also funny about what he ate, but never turned down barbeque, tomato soup, grilled cheese, applesauce, or sweet potatoes. He loved sweet tea and would drink it all day long. Horace was very proud of his collection of trains, big trucks, and fire engines.
While we are grieving the loss of the most funniest, irritating man we’ve ever known. We take comfort in knowing that he lived a good life. He loved us as we loved him, unconditionally to the end. We were blessed to have the opportunity to call him family. We are honored that God entrusted us with his care.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Hazel Bostick, Maurice Johnson, and Eunice White; brothers, William Henry, Jr., Hugh, James, Arthur, and John Alvin; dear cousin, Quovadis Wright. Horace leaves fond memories with his sister, Quovadis Mae Cooke; adopted family, John, Rita, and Ciara Smith with whom he resided in Charles City County, and Sharita Roberts (Shaun, and their children, Destiny and Cadence) of Fayetteville, GA; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Dickerson, Linda Jones, and Angela McGinnis; special friend, Percell Randall; nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 2021, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Military honors will be rendered as well.
