On the beautiful 20th day of December 1995, in Brooklyn, NY, Jahleel Emanuel Angus, affectionately known as “Papa”, took his first look at the world. He was the firstborn of four children to Creola Portious.
As a product of a Christian home, Jahleel grew up in the church fellowshipping at Grace Seventh-Day Adventist Church before the family relocated to Virginia. He was educated in the Newport News School district, where he was frequently recognized in the Daily Press for honor roll distinction.
Jahleel can best be remembered as very humble, gentle, compassionate, caring, committed to family, considerate, quiet, respectful, loving, and his mother's keeper. His favorite pastimes were his sneaker collection, listening to music, and, as described by his sisters, in earlier days, “playing with drumsticks, although he wasn’t very good.” His determination and ability to warm our hearts are worth noting. Whether in the role of son, nephew, brother, cousin, uncle, reliable and dear friend to others, Jahleel loved people and loved life. He lived it well by being helpful to others in any way possible. Jahleel was the very essence of compassion and love.
After a sudden tragedy, on Sunday, July 16, 2023, God decided to give his beloved Jahleel sweet rest. We all give thanks for the life of this irreplaceable young man, of whom we are so proud.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Edmund Sr. and Victor. Left to treasure forever his memories, his parents, Creola and Ronald Portious, Huburn Angus (Lakesha), James Weary; grandparents: Jean, Helen, and Carmin; siblings, Precious Diamond, Kayla, Unique, Camron, Jahied, Khijon, Cherish, Serenity, and Jaquazzi; nieces and nephews, Phoenix, Shanya, Sarai, Semaj, Rasim, Saniyah, Troi, and Sayiere; aunts and uncles, Geoffrey, Trevor Anthony, Edmund, Karis Onica, and Gayette; cousins, Jaylynn, Teon, Trevor Dillano, Jahmal, Trevor Trey, Karis Olivia, Precious Angel, Rihanna, Alan Michael, Aefricia, Kendera, Alan Michael II, Alicia Rosemary, Nola Rae, and Osei; and multitudes of other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
We will never forget that voice, that smile, and the rays of sunshine his life has brought to others. Rest peacefully, our beloved Jahleel, in the arms of Jesus.
