James Lee Cooper Sr., USA, Ret.

October 20, 1929 ~ September 12, 2020 (age 90)

Obituary

James Lee Cooper Sr, son of the late Corbett & Ida Cooper was born on October 20, 1929, in Monticello, FL. He gained his heavenly wings on September 12, 2020, at Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA.

James was educated in the Jefferson County School District.  He enlisted in the United States Army; retiring after many years of service.

He was joined in holy matrimony to the former Barbara Palmer.  Unto this union three children were born, Valerie, Wanda, and James Jr.

At an early age, James confessed his faith in Christ and was devoted to his church in Monticello, FL.  Upon moving to Williamsburg, he joined New Zion Baptist Church where he sang in the Brethren Choral and Senior Choir until his declining health.

James loved cutting hair.  He would cut hair for every young man and child on Centerville Road and surrounding neighborhoods.  He loved hunting, fishing, and sewing.  His first love other than his wife was farming and attending his many gardens; providing fruits and vegetables for his family and the community.  He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 2, Williamsburg, Virginia.

James was preceded in death by his daughter, Valerie Atkins; son, James Cooper; and several sisters and brothers. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of fifty-six years, Barbara Palmer Cooper of the home; children, Wanda Cooper of Williamsburg, VA, James L. Cooper Jr. of Greenville, SC, Betty Gayle Cooper of GA, Christine Burke of Pompano Beach FL, Kathy Cooper of Jacksonville, FL, and Carmella Cooper of Jacksonville, FL; thirteen grandchildren; great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Leon Palmer of Hampton, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
