James Guthrie Green, Jr. (86 years old), was born the second child and only son of James L. and Edith L. Guthrie Green in Newport News, VA. James received his heavenly reward on January 6, 2024.
In his youth, "Jimmie," as he was affectionately called, joined New Emmanuel Baptist Church (later known as Emmanuel Baptist Church) in North Newport News, VA. James worked in the church in many capacities beginning in his youth. He was ordained a Deacon on July 16, 1995, and later served as Deacon Emeritus. There was never a job too large or too small for him. He was happy to serve.
James met the love of his life, Gertrude Wallace, affectionately called "Tootie," by all who knew her, at the age of 17. After dating for several years, they were united in holy matrimony on February 14, 1959, the day love is celebrated. To this union, three daughters were born: Cheryl, Yvonne, and Jamie.
James retired from the U. S. Postal Service. James also proudly served with the United States Air Force.
James was predeceased into eternal life by his parents, James Green and Edith Green Johnson, and the love of his life, Gertrude L. Green.
James is survived by his three daughters, Cheryl Green-Bolanos (Leonard), Yvonne Green, and Jamie Green-Garlington (Anthony); granddaughter, Kendall Garlington; sister, Dorothy Skeeters; sisters-in-law, Margaret Wallace and Eileen Sheppard (Robert); brother-in-law, James Wallace (Carolyn); a very dear friend, Mr. Nelson Carter; as well as other family and friends.
Mr. Green may be viewed on Monday, January 15, 2024, in Emmanuel Baptist Church beginning at 10:00 a.m. with a funeral service to start at 11:00 a.m. Entombment with military honors to follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
