On Saturday, February 15, 2020, God sent his angels on a special mission to bring James aka “Dr. Love” “Jimmy” McCray Sr. home for eternal rest. His life began on October 14, 1955, son of the late Pernell and Roxie McCray. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Vanessa McCray, brother, Ronnie McCray, sister-in-law, Lorra McMiller, and brother-in-law, Joseph Simon.
At an early age, James confessed Christ as his Personal Savior and joined hands in fellowship with Mt. Ararat Baptist Church. He worked as a Logger with Old Dominion Logging Company until his health prevented him from doing so.
Jimmy, as he was affectionately called, was a loving and caring father, brother, grandpa, and friend. He had a witty sense of humor and kept you laughing with jokes. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Every time he went to doctor visits or the hospital, he would leave a lasting impression of laughter with them.
Jimmy leaves to cherish fond memories with his sons, James Jr. (Carletha), Dwight, O’Bryan, Joseph Jr., and James; daughters, Felicia (Brian) and Joann; grandchildren, Kaleighja, Isaiah, Jyrec, Imani, Destinee, James III, Shamar, Dwight Jr., James IV, LeSean, Amir, Jaelyn, and Jonaisia; great-grandchildren, Jakayla, and Vernon Jr.; brothers, Phillip (April), Woodrow, and Lionel; sisters, Flora, his twin Cindy, Queen (Sam), Tammie (Tony), Phyllis (Archie), Denise, and Cassandra; brothers and sisters-in-law; Joe, Apostle Sheila, Linda, Deloris, Gwendolyn (Reggie), Ethel (Jeffrey), Arthur (Bessie), Angelo (Michelle), and Vinetta; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers from Toano Logging, Old Dominion Timber, Branches Logging, DS Waltrip & Sons, Precision Services and friends.
A service to celebrate James' life will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, February 22, 2020, at Bethel Restoration Center. Interment to follow in St. John Baptist Church Cemetery. Family and friends to assemble at the church by 11:30 a.m. Friday. Mr. McCray may be viewed from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
