Jean Gerst Stewart departed this life on April 19, 2020. She was born on November 19, 1937, in Williamsburg, VA to the late Bessie and Lisbon Gerst.
At an early age, Jean accepted Christ at First Baptist Church in Williamsburg where she became an active member. She sang in the Junior Choir and attended Sunday School regularly. After moving to Trenton, NJ, she became a member of Central Baptist Church, Ewing, NJ. Upon retirement, she returned to Williamsburg and reunited with First Baptist Church where she served on the Trustee Board, History Committee, Women’s Auxiliary, Retiree’s Ministry, and Women’s Fellowship. She also worked with the Vacation Bible School where she enjoyed teaching arts and crafts.
Jean attended Bruton Heights School where she sang in the school choir and was a cheerleader. She graduated in 1956 and continued her education at Bennett College, receiving a B.A. degree in Education.
Following college, Jean taught in Salisbury, MD for five years, then moved to Trenton, NJ where she taught until she retired. She enjoyed teaching immensely. In 1990 she was recognized as Teacher of the Year, because of her love for children, passion for teaching, dedication, and hard work.
While working in New Jersey, Jean met and married the late Alan Stewart and to this union, Victor was born. Jean loved her family and family life. She enjoyed holiday family gatherings, reading, traveling, music, and watching television.
Jean was a member of the Bruton Heights School/James City County Training School/Berkeley Retirees Association, the Williamsburg Teacher’s Retirees Association, the New Jersey Retired Teacher’s Association, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Jean was predeceased by her brothers, L. Arden and Wilbur Gerst. She is survived by her loving son, Victor; brother, Lawrence (Joan); sister-in-law, Doris; and a host of nieces, nephews and many other loving relatives and friends.
Mrs. Stewart may be viewed from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday, April 27, 2020, at Whiting’s Chapel. A private graveside service will be live-streamed at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2020.
