Joanna White

Joanna White, 99, passed away peacefully after a short illness at Bayhealth Hospital in Dover, Delaware, on Thursday, January 12, 2023.  She was one of seven children born to the late Samuel and Bessie Debreaux.

She was a long-time resident of Newport News, Virginia.  She joined the Calvary Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Newport News, Virginia in 1966, where she served in the Community Service Department (Dorcus Society), Usher Board, Senior Choir, and the Calvary Church School for over 14 years.

In 1982 she was one of six Charter members to start the Mt. Calvary S.D.A. Church in Williamsburg, Virginia. She was a strong woman and her faith in the Lord helped sustain her throughout her life. She lived a long full life.

In addition to loving to be with her Church family in Worship, Seminars, Health, and Temperence and Community Services, she loved bowling, crocheting, healthy nutrition, and good music.

Joanna is survived by her two daughters, Joanette Gholston of Newport News, VA and Angela White-Watkins (James) of Dover, DE; three grandchildren, Brittany Gholston of Portsmouth, VA, Wesley Watkins of Dover, DE; and Gelissa Gholston of Hampton, VA; two of the most amazing great-grandchildren, Journee Gholston and Logan Gholston, both of Hampton, VA; three Golden Sisters, Retha Deloatch of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Irma Motley of Jackson, NC, and Mary Melton (Melvin) of Newport News, VA; two spiritual godchildren, Patricia Jones and Susie Henderson; precious nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends.

She will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at the Mt. Calvary SDA Church, 200 Railroad Street., Williamsburg. Virginia 23185.  Facial coverings are required.  At the request of the family, there will be no public viewing.
