Johnny slipped peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Monday, December 28, 2020, seemingly wanting to first celebrate 55 years of marriage to his wife Alzinia on Christmas Day. He was born on July 20, 1932, to the late Sadie and Will Holmes. In addition to Alzinia, he leaves to cherish his memory seven children: Bruce Holmes of Bronx, NY; Andra Holmes Brown (Dale) of Jacksonville, FL; Irvin “Rick” Holmes of Norfolk, VA; Thomasine White Hart (Lawnell) of Charlotte, NC; Thomas White, Jr. (Ann) of Toms River, NJ; Alzin Johnette Holmes, and John Holmes, Jr. of Williamsburg, VA; two brothers, Edward Holmes and William Holmes (Jerline); two sisters-in-law, Lucille Minkins and Julia Wallace; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Esther Mills; and a son, Timothy “Timmy” White.
Johnny and Alzinia met on a “blind date” set up by Alzinia’s brother-in-law, Mervin Piggott. They joined together in marriage with each of their 3 children on December 25, 1965. In 1967 and 1969, Alzin and John, Jr. entered the fold. John worked in Cheatham Annex in the sales department for over 35 years, retiring in 1987. In 1969, he became the proprietor of his own business, Holmes Cleaning Services, where he joyously worked until his illness in 2016. There is probably no one in town who didn’t get the opportunity to have a pleasant encounter with John. John, Jr. is now proprietor of that business, maintaining his dad’s spotless reputation.
A viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. - noon on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, followed by the funeral services at noon at Whiting's Funeral Home. Due to the current health pandemic and its restrictions, attendees will be limited to 50, with facial coverings and social distancing being required. Facebook Live Stream will be available at the beginning of the service. A memorial service will be planned for the Spring.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the team at Kindred Hospice for exemplary care during our loved one’s long illness.
