It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt love that we announce the passing of our beloved John D. McCoy III, who departed this life on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, at the age of 64.
John was born on July 7, 1961, in Williamsburg, VA, to the late Julia M. and John D. McCoy Jr., of Williamsburg, Virginia.
John was highly intelligent, and educated in the Williamsburg-James City County school system, graduating from Lafayette High School. In his later years, he studied Substance Abuse Counseling at Ashford University.
By virtue of his wit and charming personality, John was ideally suited to the hospitality industry, where he worked as a waiter and banquet server. This profession took him from Williamsburg to Norfolk, VA Beach, New York City, and finally to Charlotte, NC. John was highly regarded and respected at the Salvation Army Adult Rehab Center in Virginia Beach, where he worked through his trials and offered encouragement to the other brothers in their struggles.
John leaves to cherish his memory his treasured daughter, Alexis McCoy "his dumplin”; siblings, Billie Riley of Houston, TX, Wanda Brown of Richmond, VA and Lionel McCoy, Geryl Martin (James), and Jacqueline McCoy, all of Williamsburg, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives. and dear friends.
John will be fondly remembered by some of his nieces and nephews as their "Uncle Johnny Bonny," and by the many friends and acquaintances he had through the years in Williamsburg.
His passing was sudden and a shock to us, but we know that it was not a surprise to our Heavenly Father, and we shall find comfort in Him.
A memorial service will be held at Noon on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at St. John Baptist Church, Toano.
Service of love and comfort has been provded to the family locally by Whiting's Funeral Home, 7005 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, Virginia 23185. 757-229-3011 whitingsfuneralhome.com
