Josephine "Pie" Hargis Obituary

Josephine “Pie” Lee Hargis peacefully entered into eternal rest on Friday, January 21, 2022, at her home.  She was born December 3, 1931, the fourth child of the late Eugene and Josephine Lee.  She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Jean, Warren, Juanita, and Barbara Ann.

Josephine began her education at the James City County Training School and graduated from Bruton Heights School in 1949.  She went on to graduate from Saint Phillips School of Nursing located in Richmond, VA in 1952.  She continued her nursing education at Virginia Union University and the University of Maryland.

While attending VUU she met and fell in love with a handsome young Prince from Accomack County, the love of her life, Clifton Lee Hargis.  This relationship blossomed and in April 1953 they were united in Holy Matrimony.  In 1956 the loving couple moved to Williamsburg and purchased their first home.  They were blessed with a beautiful baby boy in March 1957, Brian Fernandez “Little Woo” Hargis, who was the apple of his Daddy’s eye.  Josephine and Clif also lost a beloved baby daughter at birth in October 1966.  Josephine is now joyfully reunited with her loved ones.

Josephine began her nursing career at Blayton’s Clinic in Williamsburg.  She later worked at the Veteran’s Hospital in Hampton, VA, and became a faculty member in the School of Nursing at Hampton University.  She ended her career as Director of Nursing at Eastern State Hospital.

Josephine was very involved in the Williamsburg Community; She was a Golden Life Member of the YJCW NAACP where she also served on the Executive Board.  Josephine also spent 12 years as a member of the York County Electoral Board, serving as Chairman and Secretary.  She volunteered with Williamsburg Faith in Action.  Her community service extended to her own beloved Carver Gardens Community as a founding member of the Philodendron Club. Josephine was a member of Frontiers International and an Organist at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church.  Josephine was a member and played a very active role in the Williamsburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  She had the distinguished honor of becoming a “Delta Dear” having been a member of her beloved Sorority for more than 60 years.

When Josephine accepted Christ and was baptized in July 1943, she became a member of Little Zion Baptist Church and remained active until her death.  Josephine joyfully participated in numerous ministries, including Director of Music, Chair of the Deaconess, Treasurer, Trustee, Vacation Bible School, and the Food Ministry.

Aunt Pie was a very diligent, devoted, loving, compassionate, honest, thoughtful, and giving wife, mother, and friend to all. Aunt Pie was a world traveler and a connoisseur of foods. When someone said let’s, she said GO! She leaves to cherish her blessed memories, her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, two great-great-nieces, and a host of other loving relatives, many caring friends, and sorors.

A service of remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 28, 2022, at Little Zion Baptist Church.  Livestream will be available at the beginning of the service.  Interment to follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the Omega Omega ceremony from the Williamsburg Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc starting at 5:30 p.m.  Facial coverings are required for all services.
