Junius "Junie Bug" Williams

On a beautiful Sunday, afternoon God sent his angels to send a message to Junius Williams letting him know that his assignment here on earth was complete and to inform him that his new home was ready.

In The Beginning

Junius "Junie Bug" Williams was born on July 22, 1927, to the late Carrie and James Williams of Dendron, Va.

At an early age, he accepted the Lord as his personal savior and joined First Baptist Church in Dendron. Later in life after relocating to Williamsburg, he joined hands in fellowship with New Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Rev. Robert Whitehead. He was a faithful member until his health began shifting. He was also a faithful visitor of Union Baptist Church, where they treated him like one of their own.

The Work

"Junie Bug," as he was affectionally known, was employed by the College of William & Mary, Allied Chemical Company for nine years, and Williamsburg Baptist Church, where he retired after thirty-nine years of service.

The Love

Junie Bug met the Love of his life the late Ethel Baker Williams of Williamsburg. They dated for two months and were joined in holy matrimony on June 18, 1977.  They enjoyed forty-two years of marital bliss.

The Journey

Junie Bug was a faithful bike rider. He rode to and from work, the laundromat, and different stores. He didn’t mind the distance. He made sure to have his backpack on his back and his helmet on his head. You could find him parked and talking around Merchants Square, Wawa formally(Tinny Giant), the bus station, Food Lion, or Ace Hardware. He enjoyed riding until his granddaughter Missy said after he turned eighty-eight, it was time to retire his ride. He then started riding the lawnmower around in place of the bike until his granddaughter Missy told him to retire that at the age of ninety. His riding days were officially over. His hobbies then became talking on the phone and looking out the window with the curtain pulled back. He also enjoyed pushing his walker around the neighborhood and sitting at the end of the driveway waving until COVID-19 changed society.

Bug was a great asset to his Church, the City of Williamsburg, and his community. He didn’t mind lending a helping hand and having conversations with anyone.  He treated everyone the same and loved giving advice. He had a passion for people and children. He didn’t mind telling a story and explaining how the world should be versus how it was when he was growing up. To have known him was a treat. He will be greatly missed by all who have been blessed to be in his presence.

The Memories

Bug has transitioned to his new address and has reunited with his wife, Ethel B. Williams; mother, Carrie Whitaker-Williams; father, James Williams; adopted mother, Fannie Battle; brothers, Frank Williams, Dukie Williams, and John Williams; sister, Dorothy Walter; nieces that he talked about daily, Ethel Pierce, Marlene Peace, and Catherine Johnson; best friends, Mr. Booker T Johnson Sr., Helen Wynne, Kenneth Gray, Herbert Moore, Mr. Conyers, Judy Piggott, John Walker, Gabriella Clark, and Arthur Wynn Sr.
 

The Legacy

He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his son, Mr. Charity; stepchildren, Felicia Johnson (Calvin), Joy Jackson (Willie), Patrice Boyd, Joann Womack, Teresa Whitted, and Cedrick Baker; brother-in-law, Nathaniel Baker (Carolyn); eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; special niece, Natalie Baker; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The Celebration

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2023, at New Zion Baptist Church.  Interment to follow at Williamsburg Memorial Park.  Mr. Williams may be viewed from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday in the church.  Facial coverings are recommended for all services.
