We regretfully announce the passing of Kiwan Curley, 60, of Newport News, Virginia. Kiwan passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2021, due to natural causes.
An independent and vibrant personality from the beginning, Kiwan will be lovingly remembered by family, friends, and the community for his kindness, generosity, positivity, and sense of humor, despite his daily battle with the ongoing illness he endured.
Never one to complain, Kiwan’s favorite saying was “Be positive, never give up!” With that mindset, in spite of many challenges, he always looked on the bright side of every situation. This perspective on life afforded Kiwan the ability to spot the goodness in everyone he met, to strike up a conversation with virtually everyone, and build respect from those who would truly come to know and love him.
In service to his country and fellow Americans, Kiwan enrolled in the Armed Forces from July 1979 until his honorable discharge from Fort Eustis in Newport News, Virginia in June 1985.
Setting roots in Virginia, Kiwan began his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Almazita and Charles Roy, and his sister, Antonia Holmes. Left to cherish precious memories are his loving wife of 38 years, Amie Curley; 3 children, Mario Curley, Dominic Curley, and Jasmin Mendoza; grandchildren, Myles Curley (9), Micah Curley (7), Amerie Mendoza (16), Anthony Mendoza (14), Alicia Mendoza (12), Emma Mendoza (6), Jonathan Mendoza (4), and Isabella Mendoza (20 mo.); siblings, Condessa Curley-Haley, Sheila LaCour, Matrix Curley, and Valentino Curley; and many loving family members and friends.
Kiwan loved his family dearly. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren virtually. He was especially proud of his children and their many accomplishments.
There were also many in the community of Newport News, VA that loved and showed generosity and support to Kiwan during the challenging times he faced. The immediate family would like to take a moment to express our sincerest gratitude to the neighbors, local establishments, community members, and programs that truly went the extra mile to make sure that his daily needs and even many of his wants were met!
