Leland "Wee" Jones

Leland “Wee” Jones, 77, of Landover, Maryland, peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, in Williamsburg, Virginia. He was born in Palmyra, North Carolina on August 19, 1944, to the late Percy and Annie Jones. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Darnell Carter, and his brothers, Eddie and Raymond Jones.

Leland accepted Christ as his personal Savior at Roanoke Zion Baptist Church in Palmyra, North Carolina. He attended Halifax County Public Schools. In the early 60s He moved to Washington, D.C.  On May 27, 1967, he married the love of his life Viola Louise Evelyn Wynne in Toano, Virginia. Their union was blessed with one child, Chandra Linette Jones.

In 2014, Leland joined Antioch Baptist Church of Deanwood, Washington, D.C. where he enjoyed serving the Lord and was happy being back in the church while attending Sunday School, Noon Day, Bible Class, and Intercessory Prayer Service with his wife.

Leland had several jobs including Georgetown Priest Dining Room, Shoe World, Montgomery Ward, and retired from Giant Food after twenty years of service. He enjoyed helping others, cooking, dancing, playing with his grandkids, and fellowshipping with family and friends. One of his specialties was cooking fried fish, potato salad, and greens on his day off for his family and neighbors. He was a father figure to many and respected by all.

Leland leaves to cherish many fond memories, his beloved wife of fifty-five years, Viola Jones; children, Kim Carter and Chandra Jones; grandchildren, Jason Carter, Antonio Carter, Jimmie Jones, Brittany Carter, Marcus Carter, Quentin Jones, and Donnie Artis, Jr.; twelve great-grandchildren; eight siblings, Minnie Jones, Cleveland Jones (Estelle), Elneta Jones, Lenora Farmer, Annie Wiggins, Gloria Jones, Betty Bazemore, and Percy Jones Jr. (Geneva); four in-laws, Thomastine Wynne, Glendora Johnson, Rev. Thomas Wynne (Ellen), and Zolena Wynne; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2022, in Antioch Baptist Church Deanwood, Washington, D. C. with Pastor Elect Rev. A. Michael Black officiating.  Live stream will be available at the beginning of the service.  Interment to follow in Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Brentwood, MD.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friday in the church.  Facial coverings are required.
