Louise Holmes Obituary

Louise Celestine Holmes, affectionately known as “Sister” departed this life on Sunday, January 14, 2024, in the loving care of her family.  She was born on December 24, 1938, in Williamsburg, Virginia, the first daughter of the late Preston M. and Mary Elizabeth Taylor Owens.

She was educated in the Williamsburg-James City County Public School System. At an early age, she confessed Christ as her personal Savior and joined Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Williamsburg where she remained an active member until her health declined. She served as a Deaconess, Missionary, on the Hospitality and Pastor's Aide Committee, and sung in the Senior and Gospel Choirs.  

She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Frederick Person Holmes. This union was blessed with six (6) children. They also sowed bountifully into the lives of their nieces, and nephews.

She was employed by the Jamestown Settlement and later at Food Lion.  She was a hard worker, a dedicated employee, and was compassionate about her career.

Mrs. Holmes frequently enjoyed attending softball games at Quarterpath Park.

She is preceded death by one grandchild and four great-grandchildren and two brothers, Preston “Dickie” Owens and Roger “Ed” Owens. 

She leaves the legacy of five generations with her children, Alvin Holmes, Valerie Louise Patterson, Ronnie Mckinsey Holmes, Wendell Kirk Holmes (Lynnette), Fredrica Personya Cowles (Ronald), Angela LaShelle Conner (Edward); seventeen (17) grandchildren; fifteen (15) great-grandchildren; one (1) great-great-grandchild; brothers, Jesse Owens and Stanley Owens (Rhonda); sisters, Irene Pressey (Sherman), Juanita Rabsatt, Jacqueline Bogger (Dennis), and Rosalind Smith (Rudolph); sister-in-law, Mary Bernice Owens; special children, Stanley Bartlett, Anthony Frazier, Milton Jones, Raymond Gray Jr., Reginald White, Dana Harris, and Cary Piggott Bartlett; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and an amazing neighbors, Pervis Gwen Byrd, and Tony, Tasha, and Gabbie Berkeley.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at Noon on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Holmes may be viewed on Saturday in the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of her service.
