Louise Laverne Hill

On August 5, 2025, Louise LaVerne Hill transitioned painlessly and quietly to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

“LaVerne” as she was affectionately called, had been sick for about two weeks, prior to that she remained active and faithful to her daily routines of morning prayer, Bible study, exercising, dressing, and cooking her breakfast, as well as serving others. She was up and down the basement stairs, washing her clothes, vacuuming the floors, and paying her bills. She was an organized person who was never satisfied sitting still. At ninety-eight and a half years old, she embodied remarkable energy and unwavering determination to get things done. LaVerne was a christian women and acted in a manner that would be pleasing to God. She had several requests granted prior to leaving this earth; to see her son on earth, join her son in Heaven, to sleep without awakening, and to be with her Heavenly Father.

She married the late Reuben S. Hill, Sr., in 1946 and moved to Williamsburg in 1950. She had nine children, three of whom preceded her in death, Hazel Hortense Wimbish, Avis Hill Lee, and Frederick Hill, Sr. LaVerne was the last surviving of five children, joining her sisters who passed on before her, Beatrice Conley, Cordelia Wright, Ethel Vaughters, and Daisy Ruff.
After settling in Williamsburg, LaVerne became a devoted member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church, where she remained an active member throughout her life. She served faithfully on the Senior Usher Board, Hospitality Committee, Queen Esther Missionary Society, Senior Saints Noon Day Bible Study, Sunday School Teacher, and as a mentor to the new young adult members. She was honored with the title “Mother of the Church.”

LaVerne was a dedicated homemaker for the first twenty years of her marriage. Once her youngest children began school, she began working outside the home, including serving a family with a special needs child. Her last employment was with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation at Christiana Campbell’s Tavern, where she worked for fourteen years before retiring in 1991.
Naturally loving and caring, LaVerne was cherished by many, both near and far. She enjoyed cooking and hosting for all occasions. She was known as “The Party Lady.” Each year she threw a big birthday party, which started as a day affair and turned into a weekly celebration as time passed, reflecting her love for life and people. Her greatest love and joy were her children and grandchildren. She had several special friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews that she loved and shared a close bond with, and who thought the world of her influence on their lives. Her contributions were widely recognized, and she was respected as an outstanding community leader.

She is survived by her children, Amanda Hill-Dandridge of Richmond, VA, Reuben Hill, Jr., and Deacon Wilbert Hill, Sr. (Rev. Doretta), all of Williamsburg, VA, Sherwood Hill of Newport News, VA, Sherron Hill, and Frederica Hill, both of Williamsburg, VA; grandchildren, Cynthia Terry, Patricia McCargo, Monica Davis, Natoya Haskins, LaTonya Robertson (Vince), Ashla Hill Roseboro, Aisha Scott, Sherrell Hill, Ayoka Dandridge, Phillip McCargo (Natalie), Wilbert Hill, Jr., Frederick Hill, Jr., Sherrick Hill, and Dr. William Hill (Jazzirelle); and a host of loving great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.
