Who would have ever thought on Friday, September 1, 2023, that God would call to eternal rest our beloved mother, grandmother, and auntie, Martha C. Armstead. Her life began on August 27, 1926, to the late Robert and Celestine Armstead, in Charles City, Va.
Martha was educated in the Charles City County public schools. At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member until her health declined. She worked at the Parkway Hotel and was a devoted employee of the Gibson family for many years.
She loved her family and helped to raise and care for many of her nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Her home was like a safe haven where people knew if they needed a place to stay or something to eat that they could go to her.
She is also preceded in death by three sisters and seven brothers; her life partner, Thomas Walker; four children, Paul, Shirley, Richard, and Susan; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
Her wonderful memories will forever be treasured by her daughter, Mary Walker of Toano, VA; two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Armstead and Patricia Armstead; her devoted granddaughters and caretakers, LaShawnna Hill (Tyre) and Monik Armstead (Tyree), both of Williamsburg, VA; two devoted great-grandsons and caretakers, Joseph Cherry and Harrison Cherry; seven other grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; twenty-four great-great-grandchildren; a great-great-great-grandchild; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
A service to celebrate Martha’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Ms. Armstead may be viewed from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
