Mary Elizabeth Smith

On Tuesday, September 3, 2024, our beloved Mary Elizabeth Greenhow Smith, affectionately known as “Toots” or “Tootsie,” entered into eternal rest in her home surrounded by her loving family. Her life's journey on earth began on February 8, 1939, and her home is now the mansion Christ has prepared for her. She was the sixth of ten children born to the late Dorothy T. Meekins and George Greenhow. She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-eight years, Thomas L. Smith; sisters, Mahilda Brown and Mignonette Canaday; brothers, Theodore Greenhow, Elihu Greenhow, and George Meekins; and son-in-law, Melvin McNair.

Mary attended Bruton Heights School, later becoming a mother and homemaker. At an early age, she was baptized at Chickahominy Baptist Church.  She later joined fellowship with Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Williamsburg where she was a beloved member. She was a faithful servant of God until her passing and was always willing to usher.

Mary leaves to treasure her blessed memories, her daughters, Beverly McNair and Sharon Givens; sons, Randy Smith (Brenda) and Wayne Smith (Betty); grandchildren, Elihu Smith, Brandy Moore-Smith, Michael Givens Jr., Shayla Washington (Khiry), Angela McNair, Michael McNair (Sydney), Aja Smith, and Bryon Smith; great-grandchildren, Devin Moore, Justin Smith, Roze Washington, Ahyona Smith, Gabriel Smith, and Kamilia Smith; sisters, Dorothy Walston and Minge Berkeley; brothers, James Chapman (Myrtle) and Bernard Meekins (Christine); sister-in-law, Camellia Druitt; close friends, Barbara Holmes, Joyce Tazewell, and Beverly Townes; Dale Richards, and Olivette Bassett, who were like daughters to her; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A funeral service to celebrate Mary's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 9, 2024, at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Smith may be viewed on Monday beginning at Noon in the church.
