Mildred Lee (Hester) Burks

Mildred Lee Burks was born on June 12, 1952, to the late Eddie Lee Hester and Mary Lee Hester in Hollandale, Mississippi. She went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 25, 2024.

At an early age, she pledged her life to Christ and was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  Later in life, she joined Rising Sun Baptist Church in Virginia, where she was an active member and a Deaconess until 2019 when she relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Mildred moved to Chicago, Illinois, after graduating from Simons High School in Hollandale, Mississippi, in 1973.  She met her late husband, Cephas Cozart Burks, in Chicago, where they spent more than thirty years together before his death. During their wonderful marriage, they had two children: Natashua Hester and Denise Williams. They relocated to Yorktown, Virginia, in 1987 and remained there for thirty years.

Mildred loved baking and her family relished her delicious creations on Sundays after church. She adored her family and treasured every minute with them.  Mildred had such a caring and humble character, and it was a pleasure to know her. She made things seem so simple, and supporting her family was her main focus. She is loved by all and her memory will live on strong by those who love her.

She leaves to cherish fond memories her daughters, Natashua Hester and Denise Chante; loving granddaughters, Natasia Monique Hester, Nakyah Mashai Marrow, and Jeyda Adrianna Smith; siblings, Ollie Tyson, Eddie Mae Rogers, Reuben H. Hester, Rosie Lee Henderson, Marie Cobbs, Martha Green, Robert Lee Hester, Ethel Rogers, Charles Hester, and David Lee Hester; four stepchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and close friends. 

A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Rising Sun Baptist Church. Mrs. Burks may be viewed from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of her service in the church.
